Making your own homemade barbecue sauces is a great experience and fun to experiment with different flavors. Try my peach jalapeno bourbon BBQ sauce , strawberry jalapeno bourbon BBQ sauce, and blueberry jalapeno bourbon BBQ sauce also! Canning homemade BBQ sauce is also healthier than buying BBQ sauces from the grocery store, because you know what is going into your sauce. No preservatives are added!
For this recipe, I processed the apples like I did for my apple butter, without peeling and using the instant pot. It works out great, you do not notice the peels, plus the apple peels add nutrients. Saves a lot of time and effort also! If you prefer to peel the apples that is fine.
I made mine with fresh apples from my apple trees. I am always looking for new apple recipes once they become ripe. That is a lot of apples! I also make apple pie filling, apple bread, easy no-peel apple butter in the instant pot and apple scrap jelly.

Ingredients for Apple Jalapeno Bourbon BBQ Sauce
- 4 Quarts of Cut up Apples
- 1 Onion
- 4 Jalapeno Peppers: Use preferred amount for desired spice level
- 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar
- 2 tsp Dry Mustard
- 1 Tbsp Canning Salt
- 2 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
- 1/8 cup Bourbon
- 2 tsp Minced Garlic
Detailed Steps to Make the Apple Jalapeno Bourbon BBQ Sauce
The first step is to rinse the fresh apples.

Then cut the apples up and place them in the quart jar to measure the amount of apples. I used a quart jar to measure, since it seemed easier than a measuring cup.

After I cut up and measured each quart of apple pieces, I placed them into a bowl of cold water with 2 Tablespoons of lemon juice. I did this to keep the apples from turning brown, it may not be necessary for the length of time you are making this recipe.

Place the cut up apples into the instant pot.

Chop the peppers and onion in a food processor and add to the apples.

Add the brown sugar.

Cook in the instant pot for 20 minutes and then natural release for 20 minutes.
Open the instant pot carefully. Stir the apple mixture, then add the remaining ingredients. Use an immersion blender to mix thoroughly. If you do not have an immersion blender, use an electric mixer. Mix until smooth.

Ladle the hot apple jalapeno bourbon BBQ sauce into canning jars using a canning funnel. Leave a 1/4 inch headspace.

Wipe the rim of the jar with a damp rag, remove the air bubbles and add the lids. Add the canning jars to the boiling water bath and process jars at a hard boil for 15 minutes. I use the Ball electric water bath canner and love it.
Remove the hot jars from the hot water bath after the processing time with a jar lifter and place jars on a kitchen towel on the counter. Do not disturb for 24 hours.

Enjoy!
Enjoy this sweet and spicy apple jalapeno bourbon BBQ sauce with any meats, such as chicken wings, chicken breasts, pork ribs or pork chops. It can also be used as a dipping sauce. The sweet heat of the apple BBQ sauce is delicious!

Do you have to use an Instapot?
No, not really. You could use a crockpot or even a large stock pot and just cook them until the apples and everything are very soft. I should probably mention that in the recipe, but since I haven’t tried it, it is hard for me to say how long to cook them. Thanks for the comment!
