Ingredients for Homemade BBQ Sauce

  • 6 cups Tomatoes: Pureed
  • 1 red, orange or yellow Bell Pepper
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 Jalapeno and 1 Anaheim Pepper: Use preferred amount and type of pepper for desired spice level
  • 3/4 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp Canning Salt
  • 2 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 tsp Minced Garlic
  • 1/2 Cup Honey
  • 1 Tbsp Chili Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Hickory Smoke
  • 1/4 cup Clear Jel

Detailed Steps for Making Homemade BBQ Sauce for Canning

The first step is to rinse and cut up the tomatoes and puree in a food processor and then add to a large pot.

I never peel my tomatoes and after running them through a food processor you do not notice the peels. Peeling is so time-consuming, plus the tomato skins have vitamins and once you put the whole tomatoes in a food processor, you basically have tomato puree.

Add the peppers and onion to the food processor and chop them very fine. If you touch the inside of the hot peppers, wear gloves. This jalapeno corer works great! Add all of the chopped ingredients to a large pot.

Add remaining ingredients to the pot.

Use an immersion blender if desired to make the BBQ sauce more smooth. Below is what mine looked like after using the immersion blender compared to the picture above.

Heat over medium-high heat to a slight boil and then let simmer for at least 1 hour on medium low heat to allow the flavors to develop into a delicious sauce and to help reduce and thicken the sauce.

Optional is to add Clear Jel to the sauce to thicken it. I added 1/4 cup of Clear Jel to 1/2 cup of the sauce in a bowl and whisked until smooth. Then add the mixture to the pot of sauce and use a whisk or immersion blender to blend and thicken the sauce.

Ladle the hot BBQ sauce into canning jars using a canning funnel. Leave a 1/4 inch headspace.

Wipe the rim of the jar with a damp rag, remove the air bubbles and add the lids. Add the canning jars to the boiling water bath and process jars at a hard boil for 20 minutes. I use the Ball electric water bath canner and love it.

Remove the hot jars from the hot water bath after the processing time with a jar lifter and place jars on a kitchen towel on the counter. Do not disturb for 24 hours.
