This homemade pizza sauce canning recipe from fresh tomatoes is so easy and delicious. I started making my own homemade pizzas over the winter and had to use store-bought pizza sauce. I decided the next tomato canning season, I was going to make my own!
The tomato harvest from my tomato plants has been huge this year and it is great to be able to make different recipes with the fresh tomatoes.
This recipe is the best homemade pizza sauce for canning you’ll ever need! It is delicious, full of flavor, and super easy to make.
Canning your own pizza sauce recipe is much more healthy and affordable than buying from a grocery store, and by canning several pints at a time, you can stock up and have homemade pizza anytime.

Ingredients
- 20 cups Tomatoes: Chopped with food processor
- 1 White Onion: Chopped with food processor
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 2 tsp basil leaves
- 2 tsp oregano
- 2 tsp thyme
- 1 Tbsp Italian Seasoning
- 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice per jar
- Optional: Add tomato paste to thicken
Steps for Preparing the Homemade Pizza Sauce Canning Recipe from Fresh Tomatoes
First, rinse the fresh tomatoes and core, if necessary. I use all varieties of tomatoes out of my garden including cherry tomatoes, but roma tomatoes and other types of paste tomatoes are best.

I never peel my tomatoes and after running them through a food processor you do not notice the peels. I peeled at one time and found it so time-consuming, plus the tomato skins have vitamins and once you put the whole tomatoes in a food processor, you basically have tomato puree.
If you prefer to peel, here is a good article that shows you how to do that. You can also use a food mill.
I also try to avoid peeling my peaches and apples. The only time I peel apples is when I make the apple pie filling. Here is an apple/potato electric peeler I purchased from Amazon that I love and is a great way to quickly peel apples and potatoes!
Add the tomatoes to a food processor and chop them up. I put the Roma tomatoes in whole. Then add them to a large pot. I used my roasting pan for my pizza sauce, so I could simmer it several hours.

Chop the onion in the food processor and add to the pot or roasting pan
Add the minced garlic and herbs and give the sauce a good stir, I was lucky enough to have dried some oregano, basil and thyme.

Simmer the sauce to make thick sauce. I simmered the sauce for 4 hours.

Steps for Canning the Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe from Fresh Tomatoes
Ladle the hot pizza sauce into canning jars using a canning funnel leaving 1/2 inch of headspace. I used pint jars and the recipe made 10 pints. I like to make two large pizzas at a time. You can also use half pint jars. Half pints would be good for individual pizzas.

Add 1 Tablespoon of Lemon Juice to each pint jar. For Quarts add 2 Tablespoons.
Wipe the rims of the mason jars, remove the air bubbles and place lids and screw band. Add the filled jars to the boiling water bath and process jars at a full rolling boil for 20 minutes. Make sure the water level is at least one inch above the jars.
I use the Ball electric water bath canner for water-bath canning and love it. Tomatoes are a low-acid food, therefore are canned using the water bath method.

Remove the hot jars from the boiling water canner after the processing time with a jar lifter and place the sealed jars on a kitchen towel on the counter. Do not disturb for 24 hours. Then store in a cool dark place.

Enjoy!
