Many Uses of Honeysuckle

Learning how to forage common weeds, flowers and herbs and what benefits they have is a very beneficial and satisfying activity. There are so many useful items you can make from so many plants. I have included many on my website.

Honeysuckle is one of my favorites, as it is so abundant and has so many uses, internally and externally, such as in the recipes I have included in this article.

honeysuckle blossom

Honeysuckle is very prolific in the late spring and early summer. The honeysuckle blossoms are very delicate flowers and the scent of honeysuckle is so fragrant. I have wild honeysuckle growing in various places in my yard. Honeysuckle is considered invasive and does seem to pop up everywhere.

Benefits of Honeysuckle

Honeysuckle is reported to have many health benefits as described in this article on the Dr. Axe website and this article on RxList which states:

“Honeysuckle is used for digestive disorders including pain and swelling (inflammation) of the small intestine (enteritis) and dysentery; upper respiratory tract infections including colds, influenza, swine flu, and pneumonia; other viral and bacterial infections; swelling of the brain (encephalitis); fever; boils; and sores. Honeysuckle is also used for urinary disorders, headache, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer. Some people use it to promote sweating, as a laxative, to counteract poisoning, and for birth control.

Honeysuckle is sometimes applied to the skin for inflammation and itching, and to kill germs.”

This article from WebMD states

“Honeysuckle might decrease swelling and also have antiviral effects. It contains essential oils as well as antioxidants such as quercetin.

People use honeysuckle for indigestion, bacterial or viral infections, memory, diabetes, common cold, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.”

Honeysuckle is reported to have many skin benefits as discussed in this article.

The article discusses honeysuckle anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties for the skin. Also the potential for honeysuckle to treat wounds, repel insects and includes ant-aging properties for the skin.
