This recipe for canning delicious caramelized onions is a great and easy canning recipe.

Caramelized onions are onions that have had the natural sugars within them caramelize from cooking them a long time with a slow heat process.

Since it takes so long to cook caramelized onions to get the best result, it is a great idea to can them to have them on hand in the pantry when you are ready to use them!

Caramelized onions are the perfect topping for steaks, hamburgers, hot dogs, and wraps. Plus they are delicious on a Philly cheesesteak sandwich, on a baked potato or with mashed potatoes or even with scrambled eggs. The onions can also be used to make a delicious French onion soup.

Ingredients for Canning Delicious Caramelized Onions

The amount of onions and butter depends on the quantity that you want to can. I used 3 pounds of onions and it made 5 half-pint jars.

Onions are low acid foods and requires pressure canning. See my article on beginners guide to canning for a complete guide on canning.

Place filled jars into the pressure canner and process according to your canner’s manufacturer’s instructions. The processing time for half pint jars is 70 minutes and pint is 75 minutes.

I use the NESCO Electric Pressure Canner. I have included step by step instructions on how to use the NESCO Electric Canner on my website.

When the canning process time is complete and the canner has had time to depressurize, remove the hot onions with a jar lifter and place the canning jars of caramelized onions on a dish towel on the counter and do not disturb for 24 hours.
