This recipe for canning homemade apple pie filling is simple and makes delicious pies!

Apple harvest season is so much fun and there is so many things to do with apples! Apple picking at a local apple orchard is a great fall activity. I have my own apple trees so even better!

My apple trees were loaded this year, so I wanted to make a lot of apple recipes. Apple pie filling and apple butter make great gifts!

This homemade canned apple pie filling can be made with different types of apples including honey crisp apples, granny smith apples, or gala. The types of apples on my trees are Jonathon, red delicious and golden delicious. I use all the different types of apples in my apple butter and other recipes.

Ingredients for Canning Apple Pie Filling

  • Apples: 6 Quarts, about 30 medium apples
  • 1 Tablespoon Cinnamon
  • 5 cups Sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups Clear Jel
  • 7 1/2 cups of water
  • 3/4 cup of lemon juice

Steps for Preparing Apple Pie Filling for Canning

First, rinse the apples.

Then peel and cut up the apples. I use this electric apple peeler, which works great!

I do not get the apples 100% peeled, which is not an issue. Also, as I am peeling, I put the apples in a bowl of water to which I have added a couple tablespoons of Fruit Fresh or similar product to keep the apples from turning brown.

For the next step, in a large pot, combine the sugar, clear jel, cinnamon and water. Cook over medium heat, until the mixture thickens. Add the lemon juice and cook for one minute.

Add the apple slices to the mixture and stir until the apples are coated. Heat until the apples are heated through, about 3-4 minutes.

Steps for Canning the Apple Pie Filling

Ladle the apple pie filling mixture into the quart jars, leaving at least 1-inch head space. You can also use pint jars for a smaller jar of apple pie filling.

Wipe the top of the jar, remove the air bubbles and add the lids.

Add the hot jars to the boiling water bath and process jars at a full rolling boil for 25 minutes.

I use the Ball electric water bath canner for water bath canning and love it.

Remove the hot canning mason jars from the boiling water canner after the processing time with a jar lifter and place the sealed jars on a kitchen towel on the counter. Do not disturb for 24 hours. This recipe makes 6 quarts of apple pile filling.
