A salve is a healing ointment, and usually a combination of oil and beeswax. The oil and beeswax are nourishing for the skin, you can use a variety of oils, including coconut oil, sunflower oil, and more. The wonderful part is that you can infuse oil with different herbs, weeds and flowers to make salve with different properties. You can then customize your salve for specific issues by infusing your oil with the plants of your choosing.

Making your own skincare products from flowers, herbs and other medicinal plants and weeds is a fun beneficial activity.

Another great reason to make your own rose salve oil and body butters, etc. is that store-bought skincare products contain synthetic fragrances, harsh preservatives, and other harmful chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin and contribute to long-term health concerns. Plus making your own violet oil and other skin care items is easy to do and much more affordable than store-bought skin care products.

Roses are so beautiful, with so many different colors and varieties. Here is a picture of a climbing rose from my yard.

Health Benefits of Roses

This article from the National Library of Medicine discusses many benefit from roses including for the skin – anti-aging and skin repair benefits.

This article states that

“When it comes to beautiful skin, roses are an excellent addition to your skincare routine. Rich in vitamins A and E, roses will help hydrate and tighten your skin while helping reduce the prominence of fine lines and dark circles. This flower also supports the body’s natural collagen production, which is basically our body’s protein responsible for healthy skin, hair, and nails. Loaded with tons of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, roses can also help reduce breakouts and calm skin conditions such as rosacea and eczema.“

It is amazing what roses and other wild flowers and plants can do!

How to Make Rose Salve

To make salves, balms, lotions and lotion bars, you need to start with an infused oil. See my recipe for making a rose infused oil.

The next step is to strain the dried rose petals from the infused rose oil.

Once you have the strained rose oil-infusion, add the desired amount to a double boiler, with a small saucepan, then add the beeswax and shea butter. My measurements are 1 cup infusion oil to 2 Tbsp. beeswax and 1 Tbsp. shea butter. These amounts would make 4 2-oz tins.

Adding beeswax to the rose infused oil to make rose salve

I used 1/4 cup infusion oil to 1/2 Tbsp. beeswax and 1/4 Tbsp. shea butter for the rose salve to make a smaller batch. It made 1 2-oz tin.

Stir until the beeswax pellets and shea butter melt.

When the beeswax and shea butter are melted, pour the mixture, which will be in liquid form into small tins or jars. I use 2-oz tins.

Option is to add essential oils or scents and/or also to add mica powder for color. I did add some pink colored mica powder to my oil and rose essential oil.

Let the salve set and set up. It does not take very long for it to harden.
